The Nisse Hat

Here is a hat to make the frost think twice. It rises from a snug, folded brim to a tall and wayward point, worked entirely by hand in nålbinding, that old Nordic way of looping wool with a single needle, one stitch drawn through the last. The bulky merino is a bright, bold red, thick and dimpled and soft as a lamb’s ear, with a warmth that laughs at the cold. Pull the brim down low over your ears and go out to the woodpile at dusk, or leave the tip to flop about however it pleases. Either way, you’ll look as though you belong to the house and the house to you.

Now, I’ll tell you how it is with the Nisse, for I’ve known a few things about household spirits in my time. Every proper hearth has someone keeping watch over it, a small, bearded, quiet-footed fellow who has lived under your roof longer than you have and means to stay. He minds the barn and the beasts and the sleeping children, and in return he asks for very little... a bowl of porridge with a great golden knob of butter on Yule Eve, and a bit of respect. Forget him, and your milk will sour and your boots go missing. Remember him, and he’ll see the whole household through the winter. And what does he wear but a tall red cap just like this one? Wear it and keep the old ways, with a little mischief besides.
