A Made-to-Order Birdhouse (Please allow 1-2 weeks production time)

Far past the last road, beyond the river of milk and the banks of jelly, a fence of bones circles a house that turns upon its fowl's legs. Speak the old words, "Turn your back to the wood and your face to me," and it will come about to greet you, a skull grinning pale from every post, as they did for Vasilisa on her long night in the witch's keeping.

Black paint, and upon it the slow art of rosemaling in miniature, teal and white petals curling along the eaves and circling the entrance. The roof is thatched with spruce twigs, with real moss and lichen epoxied in among them here and there, a crown the forest might have made itself. A weathered door stands at the end of the porch, a miniature broom at its side, and small lanterns hang beside it, waiting on the next stranger.

Beneath the house lies a woven nest, and beneath the nest, two real taxidermy turkey feet, taloned and patient, bearing the whole dwelling aloft.

For all its shadow, this is a true and gentle house. The 1-1/2 inch opening welcomes visiting birds, and a side wall opens for easy cleaning, then latches securely closed. Walls, roof, and floor are fastened tightly with screws and never glued, so the house is made to be kept and tended. Beneath the bones and moss, it is a fully working birdhouse, ready for its first small tenant to carry in a thread of nest and call it home.

Hang it where the light gives out, and let the birds decide whether they dare. No two huts are ever alike, for every flourish falls differently, and every roof is dressed in its own gathering of what the land provides.
