This is a Skjoldehamn hood, cut the way the folk of the far north cut theirs, and made for the season when the light goes early. The wool is heavy and warm, a brown like the bark of an old tree... one good layer, plainly made, the kind of thing that earns its keep the first cold morning you reach for it.

There is white cotton stitched round the face, each one set by hand, bright against the dark of the wool. And at the back, tucked down where the collar meets the neck, you will find an Algiz worked into the cloth. The old ones raised that rune for warding and for watchfulness... a small thing to carry, and good to have where you cannot see it.

It is honest work for honest weather. Pull it close, go about your day, and let it do what a good hood has always done.

The original garment was discovered in 1936 alongside other clothing items and remains of a body on the island of Andøya, and it is considered a significant piece of evidence for clothing practices in the late Viking Age, with potential connections to both Norse and Sami cultures.
